Do career ladders actually hold you back?

Story by Gemma Beasley / March 15, 2022

A TED Talk by Sarah Ellis and Helen Tupper encourages you to consider this, and whether “squiggly” careers, that is “dynamic, open-ended growth paths tailor-made for your individual needs, talents and ambitions” might be a better career path than the conventional corporate ladder.

Thinking of career paths in this way makes you consider what progression really means. Is it a promotion? or is it;

  • Options
  • Learning
  • Possibilities

They argue that if employers allow their employees to define their own career path, and support employees who are adaptable, open and curious about the options open to them, then everyone will succeed, because no two “squiggles” are the same.
